Transnet Engineering's Rolling Stock Equipment Business (RSE) is able to manufacture modern, technologically-advanced rolling stock components.

Its services include the manufacture of parts and sub-assemblies for locomotives, coaches and wagons. It is able to refurbish and upgrade equipment components so that they will cost-effectively extend the lifespan of the rolling stock they serve. RSE is a responsive and proactive operation, offering the highest levels of service. The company's customers are not only from within the rail sector, but also from many other industry sectors. While the majority of its business emanates from inside South Africa, RSE is fully able to take on work from other African countries. Currently the company employs some 1017 people at its facilities in Durban, Swartkops, Uitenhage, Bellville, Salt River, Bloemfontein and Koedoespoort. RSE's customers include Transnet Freight Rail, SARCC/Metrorail (through Transnet Engineering's Coach Business), Dorbyl's Rolling Stock Division, African Rail & Transport Services, and a number of customers in the mining industry.

An integrated, motivated team

RSE is ISO 9001 certified. Part of this accreditation requires that staff are trained and qualified to required industry standards. The company also has 'Centre of Excellence' certificates, which bear testimony to the excellence of RSE technical and administrative staff. Sweeping innovations to RSE's human resources policy have brought the company into line with world-class labour practices.

Efficient service

This combination allows RSE to offer a turnkey cost-competitive service of unmatched quality.

The Components Business has received ISO accreditation and Centre of Excellence awards at its various facilities as well as ISO14000 for its  factory, the achievement of which was a first for Transnet.

Compressor and Exhauster Test Bench

The Components Business has recently commissioned its new computer controlled test bench which was designed in-house by Transnet Engineering's engineering department.

The new bench can test one compressor, one three-phase exhauster and any combination of up to four other exhausters simultaneously with minimal operator input.

A test report is computer generated at the end of the test with a graph showing all the important test parameters and readings. This is really ground breaking technology at its best and will be the norm for all future test benches.

Turn around time at the bench has now much improved and it is fully operational.

Back to Back Traction Motor Testing Facility

This is another recent installation in the quest for technological advancement.

This test facility is a means of proving that after the motor has been repaired, it conforms to the original or upgraded design specification by putting the motors through a full-load test.
